The Foundation of a Healthy Self Image

You were created by a great God for a great purpose—you are much more than your titles, your careers, the people you know, or the events in your life. You are too great to be defined by ANYTHING or ANYONE but God.

The importance of image and identity in the life of Joseph in Genesis 37–50. Joseph overcame his brother’s betrayal and being thrown into prison for a crime he did not commit because he knew who he was and he recognized God in his life. Challenges come to EVERYONE. But a man/woman who knows who he/she is in God is indestructible.

What you really believe about yourself is revealed when challenges happen —- it will test and challenge the image you really have of yourself —
Challenges are inevitable —- to everyone

➤ Deal with storms—- things not happening as expected
➤ Deal with people— disappoint you, desert you, leave you, unfortunately even sometimes they may pass away
➤ Deal with demand for resources–

This hit home for me in 2009 when my mom passed away — it was really hard for me— and for many months I could not make sense of it—- My mom framed so much of what security meant to me—-

God had to remind me again—-he is really everything I need—he is really my rock— while I had a loving mother— neither my mom or anyone else has the capacity to be all that God is to me

Proverbs 23:7 – NKJV 7 For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.

Proverbs 4:23 – NET – 23 Guard your heart[a] with all vigilance,[b]
for from it are the sources[c] of life.

2 Corinthians 13:5 – ESV – 5 Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith.

You and l will never thrive apart from God:
• You will forever need to keep looking at God to function the way you were designed to function
• You will forever need to depend on God to function the way you were designed to function
• You will forever ever need to seek and inquire of the lord to know how to navigate through life
a. fish…..can’t survive out of water
b. plants can’t survive out of the ground

Genesis 1:26-28 – 26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over [a]all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that [b]moves on the earth.”

It is impossible for the man who knows who is he to crumble under ANY circumstance. Joseph is an example of a man who had great challenges but didn’t crumble under adversity.Even in slavery, in Portipher’s house, or in prison — he never lost his connection with God.
